First camp in my life

Did you ever spend the night under a canvas? it is a different experience. We have so many items in our room but in a camping environment, you required very few essential things for the day-to-day.  It is a unique opportunity if you are in National Cadet Corps (NCC) may be Army, Navy, or Air Wing. Apart from weekly training, you will get a chance to join Annual Training Camp, maybe for ten days.Subash Kantha Roy was a student of a school in central Kolkata, his NCC troop number was 13, Army Wing Junior Division. He had regular weekly training at the Brigade Parade Ground, it was difficult during the rainy times, there was no shed to cover from the rain

The training area is about 3 km from his residence, the uniform was issued to him from NCC which he had regular washing and pressing by him only. He had to cover the distance by walking. His unit was located inside Fort William and it is still there. He got an opportunity to see the visitor book of the unit during the last year, it is surprising to see all the entries from 1960 till 2020 are there.

The NCC Club House, another attraction is there to visit regularly.

He got a chance to attain his first NCC Camp at Adra, Purulia in West Bengal. He was then a student of class VII standard. They went to Adra by train from Howrah Junction, Their  Authorise NCC Officer also joined with them the train left late at night and reached early next  morning

Adra is mainly a Railway Colony, a camping area is there near to the station where the cadets had reached with their luggage by a route march.

The tents were pitched by the cadets about 10 to 12 cadets were sharing in a tent which was termed as 180 lbs, it has 3 standing and 1 ridge poles are there to pitch it.

We had to dig paths for rainwater to pass, and snake trenches all around the tents area. The depth of the snake trench has a depth of 4 ft and a width of 2 and 1/2 inches. Each tent had a snake bite kit in case of snakebite immediate first aid arrangement is provided. The cadets were sleeping on the ground using a groundsheet and blankets were used.

Recreation activities like indoor games and information were arranged in these bigger tents.

Rousing call The first rousing call is to get up from the bed, get the belonging in a systematic manner which is called line dressing, regular inspection and marks are allotted for the final  competition

It is about 12 km for both ways, I was not allowed to take part, due to my constant interest I was allowed to hike but not allowed to go on the top of the hill. This was my first view to watch

The washing and traveling allowances for attending the parade each day. It was paid after several months.

In 1964 there was proficiency test A Part I & II now it is only part A.

We took part Republic day parade on Red Road Kolkata our Junior division had a separate contingent.

It is a different experience from daily school classes, you can make friendship with other schools. Taltala High School had a good rapport with Ballygyung Government High School.

Ayush treatment life in our life

Practicing Ayush treatment in one of the oldest methods in India is about 5000 years old. One of the earliest civilizations at Harappa it was practiced, as per the statement by Dr. Nirmal Mazi, Chairperson of West Bengal Biodiversity.

There are about 45000 botanical species out of which 15000 species are medicinal plants.

Ayush guidelines are in 'Ather Ved' which is about 1516 BC.

Cultivation of medicinal plants is part of our Agriculture Science. Now there is a separate Ministry of our Government of India.

The agriculture extension program is given importance.

The nursery, gardens are this medicinal plants are there.

Yoga is part of this Ministry, it is now Worldwide practicing this 'Asana'.

Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy are under the Ayush Ministry of the Government of India.

In the state of West Bengal, the Government Hospital Ayurveda and Homeopathy treatment are available

The Ministry of Ayush have made  “Ayush Sanjivani” mobile application
for understanding the measures adopted by public for enhancing immunity and keeping themselves healthy in difficult COVID-19 situation.

COVID-19 has emerged as the global health crisis that poses as the biggest challenge in front of the entire world. The virus is spreading its wings at an alarming rate and morbidity and mortality are also a matter of concern globally. Apart from the health sector, the pandemic has also impacted us socially and economically. Ministry’s advisories have suggested measures which may help the public to remain healthy in pandemic times. The Ministry also published guidelines for practitioners for the management of this pandemic.

Citizens involvement in Biodiversity activities in West Bengal

People's Biodiversity Register is a legal document containing a comprehensive account of local bio-resources along with related traditional knowledge & practices of the concerned area of jurisdiction under a Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC). It also highlights the brief idea of the landscape and demography of the concerned area. As per Rule 22(10) of the Biological Diversity Rules, 2004, the preparation of PBR of a particular area is the primary mandate of the concerned BMC. A standard methodology of the PBR, developed by the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) is followed pan India. PBR is being prepared by the BMC in consultation with the local people.

Territorial Army Day celebration at Lebong, Darjeeling, West Bengal

It was in October1983, I was recommissioned in TA, I was posted 107 infantry Battalion and undergoing Annual Training Camp at Lebong. The highest race course, helipad, sports and training ground all in one this ground.

I was the parade commander of TA Day parade, the VIP for the parade was the District Magistrate of Darjeeling. It was cloudy weather with dense fog. I could not see the saluting base. On hearing some sound at the saluting base, I started the parade. I could see the VIP when I went to report.

Aajkal, a Bengali daily paper had published an article on TA which I had contributed. To collect a copy of this paper I went to Darjeeling Railway station to procure that.

We had Dushere festival in a big way, it was great scope for boosting. The liquor was diluted before opening the cap, may be by injecting through syringe.

It gave me to understand the protection system of Farakka Barrage.

The Bengdubi a cantonment where we had camped was infected with elephants. We had to arranged special protection 24x7. The PW camp was in this forest which was used during 1971 for the Pakistani soldiers.

My story

The volunteering activities are much in digital mode. The recruitment of volunteers, staff,  procurement of items, service, movement of volunteers & staff, campaign, accounting, report writing, and communication much on digital mode. The citizens are more using this mode.

The International Organisation are using this system much beforehand but the present pandemic has forced them to those who are not doing one year before.

The meetings, webinars, film festivals, performing art activities, and inauguration of the projects all are in virtual mode, these are some of the practices of the present.

A private group on social media started about 10 years back to promote volunteerism in Red Cross Red Crescent. This group is having members of about 792 they are from 89 countries and 100 cities. The post includes visuals, data, and publications from ICRC and surveys of opinion.

Virtual Volunteering

The above statement is of the 21st century, what was the condition of 50 years back? Our country had an experience of refugees from the neighboring country, we had to arrange for their humanitarian services the International Committee of Red Cross and other donor agencies also helped in this effort.

I was a college student of the age of 21 years. I had noticed the volunteers of the Disaster Training Institute (DTI) of the Indian Red Cross Society in central Kolkata went to help with this work. I learned the art of volunteerism from them and still, I am practicing. The Institute is no more functional. I have still contact with one of the instructors Mr. Kajal Sen, who is at the age of 82years. I have been to so many National level Institutions of the Indian Army, State Bank of India. The mode of instructions at DTI still superimposed to me. Visual of Kajal Sen at Facebook

Support by senior in the Territorial Army

I was aware of Territorial Army (TA), I had applied for TA Commission while I was serving Food Corporation of India, I left this organisation after 6 and 1/2 years. My application for TA Commission was approved by Central Office of State Bank of. India. I got recommissioned in TA in July1983, I was posted to 107 Infantry Battalion,it was located then Jalpahar, Darjeeling. This unit men are from hills mostly Gurkha. In the Indian Army I have the experience to serve with Gurkhas. The Gurkhas from West Nepal are simple and sweet.

I got married in July 1982. We had 2 days reception programs first day at Territorial Army Institute (TAI) at Brigade Parade Ground and next day at my home at Central Kolkata. I had an opportunity to meet Col A K Sanyal, an Officer from Brigade of Guards. He was then It Secretary of TAI.

The TAI was available to me free of charge including guest room.

In 1983 I Was finnancially supported by Dept of Youths Services, Government of India it was promotion of mountain adventure. TAI was available to us free of cost for holding 6 days program.

In May 1984 an Army exhibition was held at Fort William. There were 2 stalls on Bengal's contribution India's freedom struggle and Indian Armed Forces. The first topic was organised by Government of West Bengal. The second one we had organised including Indian National Army (INA).The monochrome visuals were available from Netaji Research Bureau, Kolkata.
